Description

Earthworms have narrow, segmented bodies which can vary in size from 90 � 300 mm. They also vary in colour from creamy white to dark red, depending on the species, what they are feeding on and the soil type. They are important for soil fertility as they incorporate organic matter into the soil

Symptoms

In the spring and autumn worm casts are often more visible but can be a nuisance on lawns and gravel paths. These small mounds of earth consist of soil and waste food excreted by the worms as they digest organic matter, they may also contain weed seeds which can be a problem. Although the presence of worms in a soil id very important for soil fertility, the can encourage moles into the area as their main food source is the earth worm.
