The best time is just as it finishes flowering. Give the plant a trim, removing the old flower spike and several leaves from each shoot. Aim to prevent the plant becoming too tall and leggy with bare woody stems at the base, but this plant does not respond to hard pruning, so avoid cutting back into old wood or it will die.
