This autumn marks a golden milestone as the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS), launched its first Great Autumn Flower Show in 1976. This was a pioneering concept at the time, as the show combined specialist floral societies with fruit and vegetable competitions, creating a broader celebration of horticulture that remains its defining characteristic today.

Originally staged in Harrogate’s Valley Gardens, the show soon grew in scale and reputation. In 1983 it moved to the Exhibition Halls, expanding its range of nurseries, exhibitors and competitive classes.

Further growth led to another relocation in 1995 to the Great Yorkshire Showground, where the event continued to evolve, before moving again in 2001 to Newby Hall & Gardens - the Shows current home - offering visitors a stunning parkland setting and the opportunity to experience Newby's beautiful gardens as part of the Show.

Over time, signature competitions have helped define the event, from the National Dahlia Society and the National Chrysanthemum Society to the introduction of the National Onion Championships in 1983 and the giant vegetable classes in 2011.

This year the Show will celebrate with a packed programme of floral displays, competitive classes and seasonal highlights across the show.

At its heart are the show’s signature floral competitions, with outstanding displays of dahlias and chrysanthemums alongside a wide range of seasonal blooms. Fruit and vegetable competitions will continue to amaze - take a look at the full competition schedule online.

A special centrepiece for the anniversary will be Grain & Grandeur...the Harvest Ball, a celebratory floral art installation created by acclaimed floral designer Jonathan Moseley, reflecting the richness of the autumn season within the unique setting of Newby Hall's principal rooms.

Alongside the competitive elements, visitors can enjoy inspiring show features, specialist growers and creative displays celebrating the best of British horticulture.
