Are You Wasting Money Watering Your Lawn?

Many households are questioning if watering their lawn is worth their time or their money, especially following drought conditions and hosepipe bans.
As of 2025, a cubic metre of water cost £3 on average. If you were to water at 25mm per square metre on a 100m2 lawn this would be 2.5 cubic metres of water or £7.50.
Jonathan Davis, resident lawn care expert at Lawnsmith explains how watering correctly can allow homeowners to use less water but still get great results from their lawns:
“Doing this weekly during the driest months is affordable for many and may cost less than repairing the lawn.”
“Watering too often, too little or at the wrong time of day promotes disease, moss, weeds, weed grasses such as annual meadow grass and shallow rooting.”
At this time of year grass, unlike most other plants, turns yellow and brown as it goes into a state of dormancy when moisture reaches critical levels. It will resume growth once water becomes available again.
