A new Agapanthus, developed over more than 20 years, is set to make its UK debut in 2027. Agapanthus Everpanthus® ‘Poppin’® Pink’, described as the world's first truly pink, hardy Agapanthus, is being introduced by Thompson & Morgan in collaboration with specialist nursery Fairweather's.

Developed by renowned South African plant breeders Andy de Wet and Quinton Bean, the new variety is the result of more than two decades of careful selection involving tens of thousands of seedlings.

Unlike traditional blue, purple and white Agapanthus varieties, ‘Poppin’ Pink’ produces rounded clusters of vivid pink flowers. Deep magenta buds gradually open to reveal bright pink petals, each marked with a darker cerise vein. The colour intensifies in strong summer sunshine, creating a striking display.

Part of the Everpanthus series, the variety also offers an extended flowering season, with fresh flower stems appearing continuously throughout summer.

The evergreen plant grows to approximately 70cm tall and 60cm wide, making it suitable for both borders and containers. It thrives in full sun, tolerates dry conditions once established and is hardy to around -7°C, although additional winter protection may be needed in colder areas.

The new variety is being propagated in the UK by Fairweather's, which holds the National Collection of Agapanthus.

Patrick Fairweather, Managing Director of Fairweather's, says: “This is the most exciting plant introduction that I have ever made, and it’s certainly the most exciting introduction in the genus of Agapanthus because this is the world’s first truly pink Agapanthus. It’s taken more than 20 years of breeding in South Africa, working with tens of thousands of seedlings and plants to achieve this unique colour.”

Growing advice: Plant ‘Poppin’ Pink’ in a sunny position using well-drained soil or compost. Avoid waterlogging and, once established, feed with a high-potash fertiliser to encourage flowering. In colder areas, protect plants from severe frost or move containers to a sheltered, frost-free location during winter.
