The roots have been infected by the soil-borne honey fungus, which causes the branches and stems to die off gradually. Honey-coloured toadstools visible close to the affected tree in early autumn are an indication that it is dying and will not recover. At present there is no cure, so you must remove the dying plant with as much root as possible.
