The best time to prune is from late autumn through to early spring. Your aim should be to create an open, multi-stemmed shrub. Start by removing about one-third of the older, woody shoots, cutting them down to 2.5cm (1in) above the ground. Cut back about half the young shoots to 15cm (6in) and leave others full length.
