Wood ash is often added to the garden to help improve the soil structure, as the coarse lumps help to open up the soil so it will drain more quickly. It can also be spread around plants to deter slugs, but only works when dry. The ash usually contains a small amount plant food (up to 3% potassium), but may raise the soil pH as it can be slightly alkaline.
