Wood ash is often added to the garden to help improve the ground, as the coarse lumps help to open up the soil so it will drain more quickly. It can also be spread around plants to deter slugs, but only works when dry. The ash usually contains very little plant food, but may raise the soil pH as it may be slightly alkaline.
