How do I encourage my geraniums to flower?

Our Advice:

To encourage your geraniums to flower, make sure they are getting enough sunlight and water. Fertilise regularly with a balanced fertiliser, and prune the plant regularly to remove spent flowers and stems. You can also deadhead the plant regularly throughout the growing season to encourage more flowers.

Geraniums: Overview

Geraniums, also known as cranesbills, are a genus of flowering plants native to temperate regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, and North America. They are popular ornamental plants due to their colourful flowers, long blooming period, and ease of cultivation. Geraniums come in a variety of colours, including pink, red, purple, and white, and can be used in a variety of garden settings, from borders to containers.

Geraniums: Characteristics

Geraniums are herbaceous perennials that grow in clumps and can range in height from a few inches to several feet. The leaves are often deeply lobed and may be either evergreen or deciduous, depending on the species. The flowers are usually held in loose clusters and have five petals, often with distinctive veining. Geraniums bloom from late spring to early fall and can be encouraged to bloom again by deadheading spent flowers.

Geraniums: Cultivation

Geraniums are relatively easy to grow and care for, making them a popular choice for gardeners of all skill levels. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, although some species can tolerate more shade than others. Geraniums are drought-tolerant and can be grown in a wide range of soil types. They are also relatively pest and disease-resistant.

Geraniums: Uses

Geraniums are often used in garden borders, rock gardens, and containers. They are also used as ground cover and can be planted on slopes to help control erosion. Geraniums are particularly well-suited for cottage gardens, as their colourful flowers and long blooming period complement the informal, relaxed style of this type of garden. In addition to their ornamental uses, some species of geranium have medicinal properties and are used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments.

Geraniums are a versatile and attractive addition to any garden or landscape. With their colourful flowers, long blooming period, and ease of cultivation, they are a popular choice for both ornamental and functional purposes. Whether used in garden borders, rock gardens, containers, or as ground cover, geraniums are a valuable member of the plant kingdom.
