When is the best time to prune a gooseberry?

Our Advice:

Just as the buds burst in early-spring, remove dead or dying shoots. Shorten main branches by a third, cutting to an outward facing bud. Remove any shoot tips affected by mildew. Cut back all side shoots to 3 buds to form fruit-bearing spurs.
