This should be done in late winter or early spring. Cut out the weak, thin growths and remove any shoots crossing through the centre of the plant. Prune out a few of the oldest stems completely, cutting them down to ground level if possible. Aim to create a bush with an open centre to reduce the chance of fungal diseases.
