Why did the leaves of my Phlox plants turn brown?

Our Advice:

Phlox often develop powdery mildew in late summer, especially if we have a period of dry weather. It's not worth spraying this late in the year as the top growth will soon die down for the winter. Next year, spray the plants in July with Fungus Fighter Plus from Bayer or Rosegarde from Vitax to protect the leaves.
