Can ash from a wood burning stove be used as fertiliser?

Our Advice:

Wood ash contains very little plant food, but may raise the soil pH as it may be slightly alkaline. It is often added to the garden to help improve the soil by opening the soil so it will drain more freely. It can also be spread around plants to deter slugs.
