Can I use the ash from my coal fire as a fertiliser?

Our Advice:

Coal ash contains very little plant food (perhaps small amounts of sulphur) but it may be added to the garden to help improve the soil by opening it, so that it will drain more freely. Coarse ash can also be spread around plants to deter slugs from attacking them.
