Chrysanthemums can be overwintered in colder climates by protecting them from frost and cold temperatures. In the fall, cut back the stems to about 6 inches above the soil level and mulch heavily around the base of the plant with straw or leaves. Cover the plant with a frost blanket or row cover to protect it from freezing temperatures. In the spring, remove the mulch and frost cover and allow the plant to grow back naturally.
