Dianthus plants prefer a bright, sunny position with good drainage and neutral to alkaline soil if planted outdoors. Indoors, grow them in a cool, well-lit spot and water regularly to keep the compost slightly moist, but never wet. Remove the old flowers as they die to keep more coming. Repot when you see roots coming out of the base of the current pot.
