When should you split a New Zealand flax plant?

Our Advice:

The best time to divide Phormium is in spring before the new growth starts. These plants have a tough, woody root and you will need to use a saw to split off sections of plant. Each division must have roots as well as leaves to be able to grow as a new plant. Make sure you don't replant the divisions too deeply.
