When is the best time to divide a New Zealand flax plant?

Our Advice:

The best time to divide Phormium is in the spring before the new growth starts. These plants have a tough, woody rootstock and you will need to use a saw or an axe to split off sections of plant, but each division must have roots as well as shoots to be able to grow as a new plant.
