If I break a large bracket fungus off my tree, will it stop spreading?

Our Advice:

Breaking off the bracket may help check the spread of the fungus for a while, but realistically there is little that can be done to prevent the fungus from killing the tree. Contact a qualified tree surgeon (a member of the Arboricultural Association) for advice.
