This is dog lichen, which usually indicates heavy, poorly-drained soil. Apply lawn sand to kill it and spike the lawn in spring to a depth of 4-6 in (10-15cm). Feed in autumn with Autumn Lawn Feed and Moss Killer from Westland to restore strength and vigour.
