Lewisia prefers a very free-draining, neutral soil. Evergreen forms do better in light shade, while deciduous types do better in a bright, sunny spot. They are very prone to basal rotting so those grown in pots often survive the winter better if the pots are laid on their sides to keep the plants and compost drier.
