When is the best time to move a 5-year-old Japanese maple?

Our Advice:

The best time is now after the leaves have fallen. Take as large a ball of soil with the roots as possible and ensure the soil is moist before you dig up the plant. After transplanting your maple, use guy ropes to keep the plant stable and prevent it from rocking.
