It is safest to prune these plants in mid- to late-summer when they are in full leaf. Acers are very prone to a fungal disease called coral spot, which can be a killer. Pruning is done in the summer when there are no coral spot fungal spores around. In addition, pruning cuts will heal more rapidly when the tree is growing vigourously.
