Prune figs in late-spring or early summer by cutting out some of the older, thicker stems and shortening some of the young shoots back to a single leaf or bud, to promote healthy new growth. Remove some of the new side-shoots if they become overcrowded, and any very vigourous shoots which spoil the balance of the plant.
