Why did my baby pears turn black and drop off last year?

💡 Our Advice
This is caused by grubs of pear midge feeding inside embryo fruits, causing them to abort and fall off. Rake up and burn any fallen fruitlets and spray the tree (from mid-spring) with either PY Insect Killer ( Vitax) or Provanto Fruit & Veg Bug Killer (Bayer) to kill the adults before they lay eggs.
