What causes the white, mossy fungus on my azalea?

💡 Our Advice
This is lichen, often mistaken for a fungus but actually a small plant that lives harmlessly on another plant. The appearance of lichen on plants is often an indicator that growth is slow and they lack vigour, particularly old fruit trees and azaleas. Feed your azalea with ericaceous fertiliser after flowering to improve the growth.
