What is causing the white fungus on my apple tree?

💡 Our Advice
This is not a fungal growth but an insect called wooly aphid, which covers itself with fine white strands of wool-like wax. Spray the whole tree during dry, calm weather with Bug Clear Ultra from Scott's, which works best when the plant is actively growing and the average temperature is above 6c. Follow the directions on the carton.
