What is causing the white wool-like fungus on my apple tree?

💡 Our Advice
This is an insect woolly aphid and the wool is a type of waterproof wax. Spraying with insecticides, such as Resolva Bug Killer from Westland or Sprayday Bayer Greenfly Killer'>Greenfly Killer from SBM/Bayer, will kill these insects as they feed. The tree must be in leaf when you spray so that the plants can take up the chemical into their sap stream.
