When is the best time to prune a walnut tree?

When they are in full leaf during mid-summer when the tree is growing rapidly. Pruning in winter can cause severe die-back and pruning in early spring means they may bleed large quantities of sap, which can considerably weaken the tree, leaving it open to fungal rots.
