Why do strawberry plants need the old leaves cutting off?

💡 Our Advice
Defoliation is done for a variety of reasons. Cutting off old leaves allows new ones to develop and expand and any lingering pest or disease problems may be removed with these older leaves so the chance of grey mould spreading to new fruit is reduced. Avoid trimming too low as this may damage the crown of the plant.
